Australia Earns First World Cup Win, Beating Sri Lanka by Five

Australia beat Sri Lanka by five wickets in a thrilling contest to claim their first victory in the Cricket World Cup.

Sri Lankan starters Pathum Nissanka (61) and Kusal Perera (78) got off to a good start after winning the toss and opting to hit Lucknow, but the Australian bowlers went through the middle and lower orders to drop them to 209 in 44 overs.

Pitcher Adam Zampa was selected for the bowlers, who took 4-47 of their eight overs.

Australia had a shaky start after furious David Warner (11) and Steve Smith (0) were dismissed by Dilshan Madushanka in the same match against lbw, leaving them 24-2.

Nevertheless, Marnus Labuschagne (40) and Josh Inglis (58) helped their team recover in partnership in fourth position, totaling 77 points.

Markus Stoynis (20-no) showed some killing intent, knocking out Danit Vellaledge with a six-goal difference to help his team reach 215-5 and secure their first victory of the tournament with 88 balls remaining.

After Cummins dismissed the rookies, it was Zampa, who produced the worst bowling totals in ODI cricket with a score of 0-113 in his team’s 164-run loss to South Africa last month, who showed an incredible return to form.

Eight Sri Lankan batsmen failed to score double-digit points: Sadira Samaravikrama (eight), Chamika Karunaratne (two) and Mahish Tikshana (0) were caught by Zampa.

Sri Lanka were left action for the race after losing a large number of wickets when Charit Asalanka (25) offered some hope, but her teammates struggled with the pace of Mitchell Starc (2-43).

After a short delay due to rain and a dust storm, the players returned to the field during the 33rd overtime, and Stark struck immediately, dismissing Dhananjaya de Silva (seven), who caught an inside edge that crashed into his leg stump.

Stark striked again in the 35th minute, this time with a bright strike from York, which Danit Wellage (two) brought to the middle and released a tight single.

Cummins picked up the ball carefully, hit it right on the trunnions and, despite the full immersion of Wellalage, came an inch out of his crease.

Glenn Maxwell (1-36) cleared the tail by anchoring Sri Lanka’s Asalanka with a catch by Marnus Labuschagne at depth.

Zampa: “I’ve had better days”

“To be honest, I didn’t feel very well. I’ve been suffering from back spasms for the last two days, so it was just about trying to deal with it, but I feel like I played better. Sometimes you have days like this.

“I’ve had days when I felt better and bowled better. Personally, I know I’m not in the best condition, but it’s nice to be on this end of the result. My role is to take the land, and I didn’t do it for the guys in passed away. It’s nice to be on top of today’s result.”

Cummins: “Our bowlers did a great job”

“After two defeats, we were ready, and everyone in this group is at a high level.

“His rookies started very well, and we got off to a good start. We were looking at the trunk of a large score. We stuck together and all our bowlers did a great job. We know what we are capable of as a team, and the outside noise doesn’t bother us too much.

“I hope this result can move us forward. All the parts of the game came together today, and we have to make sure that it stays that way.”
